Description

The procedure relates to the preparation and issuance of a birth certificate by a Greek Consular Authority. The competent local Consular Authority in whose region the birth took place draws up a birth certificate. When the birth certificate is drawn up, it is automatically forwarded by the Consular Authority to the competent Municipality for registration in the population registers and, when it concerns males, in the Register of Males.

Notes

A Consular Authority will follow the following procedure when preparing and issuing a birth certificate: On the day of the declaration appointment, the interested parent comes to the Authority, presenting the necessary documents, such as the child’s birth certificate, or in the case of newborns, the certificate of the foreign maternity hospital, and completes the relevant application form, in which the details of the child and the parents’ details (name, surname, profession, etc.) are requested. The nationality and registration data of the parents with the municipality, which are also required, can be found in the certificate of family status, which is sought ex officio by the consular authority. The declaration of the birth certificate, countersigned by the parent and consular officer, is based on the documents presented, the certificate of family status, and the information filled out by the parent in the application. Declaration of civil status events, such as birth, before the competent consular authorities by Greek residents permanently residing abroad is their obligation, and failure to disclose shall result in specific administrative fines (statutory fines provided for in Presidential Decree 16/2014 (Government Gazette, Series II, No 24).
